Telling The Tale ‘Concepts’ Workshop with Ruth Buchanan and Julie Cross. £70. Sunday 14 October, 10am – 4pm at The Granary Weston Park. Click the image or link at end of description to book.

We will start in the morning with Ruth, paying attention to how composition can improve you work. After looking at composition designs, we will take images and experiment with different compositions, formats and the effects that they give. Please bring a sketchbook and sketching tools for exercises and taking notes. After lunch you will have the opportunity to tour the exhibition and discuss about the approaches that they took for their paintings with the artists. Capitalising on the morning session and tour, Julie will then focus on using figures in the composition to tell a story, with the emphasis upon drama and impression. Including indicating mood through gesture (pose and body language) and placement of the figure (focusing on variations of placement of the horizon line). Feel free to bring the medium of your choice as the emphasis is on the conceptual and ideas to take away for your own paintings. Advance booking required as places are limited.

Maybe you are a painter who feels that drawing will strengthen your painted work: “If painting is dancing for the soul, then drawing is the singing, the beat, the music for the painting to dance with.” Learn (the all-important) how to look, build your confidence and discover the joy of drawing. We promise that you will surprise yourself with what you can achieve! Advance booking required as places are limited.
